On Sunday November 14th from noon to 2:00pm, Ocean Air Flight Services will will be hosting a Pumpkin Drop to benefit the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) Young Eagles program.Originally scheduled for November 7th, the drop has been RESCHEDULED for November 14th due to rain.
Young and old alike are invited on Sunday afternoon to bring their (uncarved) left-over Halloween pumpkins and test their accuracy hitting a ground target for fun and prizes.
Originally hosted by the Santa Cruz Flying Club, the Pumpkin Drop has been a popular annual post-Halloween event at the airport. Pilots volunteer their time and aircraft to take pumpkin droppers twice around the pattern and over a 5-foot-by-5-foot target located beside the runway. Prizes are awarded for pumpkins or fragments thereof that land closest to the target.
"Its always been a fun community event", says James Taylor, Manager of Ocean Air Flight Services, "and we are very happy to be able to support the local EAA Chapter Young Eagles program in the process".
The EAA Young Eagles program was launched in 1992 to give interested young people, ages 8 - 17, an opportunity to go flying in a general aviation airplane. These flights are offered free of charge and are made possible through the generosity of EAA member volunteers. Since 1992, more than 1.5 million Young Eagles have enjoyed a flight through the program. Young Eagles have been registered in more than 90 different countries and have been flown by more than 42,000 volunteer pilots.
Ocean Air Flight Services is a flight school and aircraft maintenance facility featuring new light sport aircraft (LSA) and offering training toward both the "traditional" FAA Private Pilot certificate and the newer and more affordable Sport Pilot certification. The Pumpkin Drop will be held from noon to 2:00pm at the Ocean Air hangar located at 170 Aviation Way, off of Airport Blvd in Watsonville.
